City College has been promoting sports and games not as a matter of policy but as a platform to groom youngsters for the coming years. Besides, an admission quota has been introduced, sporting achievements duly recognized through special facilities and awards being offered to deserving players. The college participates in various tournaments organized by Calcutta University as well as by state level sports bodies like CAB, IFA, WBTTA, State Sports and Games championships, etc. In order to give the students a taste of adventure sports, a trekking programme to Sandakphu was organised in 2007 under the UGC Adventure Sports Scheme. A small team was also sent to attend a rock-climbing course in Purulia.
The College cricket team won the CAB-organised Inter-College tournament in 2008. Also, a number of students from our College have represented the State and the University in different disciplines. Due to this active pro-sports stance, previous years have yielded impressive results, the college winning not less than 10 trophies in various sports event. This is keeping in line with the winning of the CAB Inter-college cricket tournament in 2008.
The college women Table Tennis team has won 4 trophies in the previous years. The college football team was the runners up in all the last 3 edition of the North-Calcutta District Meet. The cricket team was runners up in 2011-2012 in the Calcutta University Tournament. The men and women athletic team was declared champions in the just concluding North-Calcutta District Meet, with Mr. Lokdeep Kabiraj and Miss Pamela Lahiri being declared as best athlete in men and women section respectively. Lokdeep was also declared as the best athlete in the Inter-college inters District Championships. He is also one of the four men athlete selected to represent India in the Asian and World athletic meet. City College also has a number of students representing the State and the University different disciplines.
Inter-class Tournament in Football and Cricket are held, along with individual tournaments for indoor games The College Annual Sports, takes a competitive and festive mood each year that evolves enthusiasm among the students, non-teaching and teaching staff.
The college has a fully equipped gymnasium, inaugurated in early 2005. Health conscious students and members of the staff pursue fitness program under two qualified trainers, who provide guidance. The multigym remains open on all working days during the college hours.
Sanchayan-Annual Magazine : The College annually publishes a magazine where all sects of the institution (students and staff) contribute.
Smaranika (Commemorative Volume for the 125th Anniversary) : On the occasion of the 125th anniversary a commemorative volume was published by the College. This publication deserves a special accolade for its rich content which showcased the enviable heritage of this Institution as well its present features. This volume has received much praise from its readers and reviewers for commendable research work and authentic documentation.
Departmental Wall Magazines : Some departments of the College regularly their wall magazines where the students and teachers contribute academic articles and features.
Special Publications : City College Centre for Economic Studies publishes survey reports and academic articles by students and teachers.
A cultural fest ‘Sangri-la’ is organised annually by the Students’ Union. It is a hugely popular event. As inter- College competitions are held for several disciplines, a large number of students from other Colleges participate in this 4-day fest. Sangri-la gives the students of City College the opportunity to showcase their cultural talents.
The Students’ Union organizes separate annual excursions for boys and girls. These excursions are very popular among the students and draw a large number of student participants.
Academic excursions are organized by the departments of Botany, Zoology and Physiology for the students of the respective departments. Short one-day local academic excursions are held about 5-6 times a year. Students are taken to important locations mostly outside the state under the guidance of teachers for long academic excursions, each of 7-15 days duration. 3 such excursions are organized every year. These excursions form an important part of the academic activities of the students of departments of Botany, Zoology and Physiology.
The NSS (National Service Scheme) unit of the College is the formal platform through which the students are encouraged to participate in social welfare programmes. The recent activities of the Unit include :
- Conducting two health camps ( eye check-up and general-cum- cardiology ) in collaboration with Rotary
- Organizing an art-and-craft workshop as well as a sit-and-draw competition for underprivileged children of the locality
- Conducting a socio-economic survey in the locality
- Undertaking a cleaning drive in the areas near the College
Apart from the above, the Students’ Union as well as the Employees’ Union of the College periodically organise blood donation camps Students also participate in community welfare programmes ( e.g. free eye surgery camps) conducted by many other organizations. Many faculty members also participate and contribute to numerous popular science programmes organized by different science communities. Many students, teaching and non-teaching staff members are also associated with different social organizations and contribute effectively to social outreach programmes.
The college offers an opportunity to the students to expand all-round knowledge base through different societies /associations and centres.
The Biological Science Association and Physical Science Association help to create interest and expand knowledge for the science students by organizing lectures, debates, symposia, seminars, exhibition and also publishing articles on various science topics.
"City College Centre for Economic Studies" has been formed to provide a forum for the students and teachers of the departments of Economics and Commerce to pursue knowledge in the related fields. The centre has already undertaken different projects where the students have taken an active part. This activities have helped students to develop a research orientation.
The college has organized a UGC sponsored "Foundation Course in Human Rights and Duties education" as a part of its endeavour to impart value based education to the students . This programme is likely to be a regular feature.
