About the Department


Brief History:
The Department of Bengali was established in 1920. Within a short period of time, teaching of Bengali as an Honours subject was initiated. The department is steered by a committed and stalwart team of professors who seek to constructively implement the objective of imparting knowledge in Bengali. The Department proudly swaggers about a healthy and cordial student-teacher relationship.

The department places great emphasis on regular assessment of students’ progress. With that objective class-tests are frequently conducted. The department also conducts ‘Guardians’ Meet’ so that the guardians can be aware of the progress of their wards. The department runs a seminar library for its Hons. students. There are about 354 books (mostly reference books) in the said library. Apart from delivering routine-lecture, the department encourages the students to submit synoptic seminar papers and participate in debates and group discussions. The latter is followed by question-answer session. Through interaction teachers try and develop students’ logically, sense of critical appreciation and writing skill. Creative writing is also encouraged. The students of the department publish literary magazines under the supervision of the teachers of the department. As the department of Bengali is a very small department in so far as the number of Hons. students is concerned, the teachers are generally quite intimate with the students. As a result, the students often seek guidance from the teachers not only in academic matters but also when the face any personal or career related problems.

The department has planned to orient the students for cultural activities so that they may progress in cultural fields, viz. drama, debate etc. The department humble recalls of having renowned faculty members that include, to name a few, Prof. Narayan Gangopadhyay, a widely acclaimed novelist and short-story writer, Prof. Shankho Ghosh, an eminent poet and essayist, Prof. Shankari Prasad Basu, a distinguished author of remarkable books on religious and social framework of India and winner of Jnanpith award, Prof. Bibhuti Chowdhury, renowned Teacher, Prof. B. Sarkar, famous teacher, Prof. Kshetra Gupta, eminent teacher and essayist, Prof. Janhabi Chakraborty, renowned teacher and essayist.
