About the Department
Brief History:
The Department of Philosophy was established in 1881, one of the oldest departments of City College. The subject is extremely dynamic in recent time and dealing with criticism of life, ethical values of life, rational thought. It enquiries into the nature, meaning, purpose, origin and destiny of human life.Prof. BrajendraNath Seal, Prof. Ramaprasad Das, Prof. DebiprasadChattopadhyaya were among those who led the department to early progress and spread philosophical knowledge within the society.
The Department of Philosophy offers facilities like access to departmental library, seminar library, and organizing special lectures, student’s seminar, excursion, cultural programme. We are providing online study material for students.
Apart from lecture method, the department encourages the learning of students through presentation of short seminar papers by the students, group discussions of the students in presence of teachers, question answer session by students. Microteaching and informal teaching is done in small groups even beyond scheduled contact hours. Publication of departmental magazine under the guidance of teachers.
The teachers keep a eye on each student’s weakness and strength in respect of the preparation of University examination. The students also keep constant touch with the department after graduation, even after post-graduation for personal and academic counseling. In consequence the department has a nice strength of alumni who are teaching in schools and colleges.
Teachers participate in the U.G.C. assisted seminar organized by colleges & University.
The teachers are also associated with various administrative and organizational activities in the college and also academic activities in the university.
