About the Department


Brief History:
The department of Physics was established in the year 1939. This department is one of the oldest science departments of the college. The honours course in Physics was introduced in 1947. The department can boast of some eminent physicists who taught in this department. Prof. J.R. Sen, Dr. M. M. Ghosh, Prof. C. R. Dasgupta, Dr. P. K. Sen, Prof. H. L. Chatterjee, Prof. M. Dutta, Dr. N. Bandyopadhyay, Dr. S. Dutta are a few of them. Many brilliant students from this department are now engaged in higher education and research in different reputed Universities and Institutes in India and abroad.

The department offers two UG Physics degree courses namely Honours course and General course of 3 years duration, following the guidelines of the University of Calcutta. The students learn Physics under the guidance of highly qualified faculties of this department. Facilities for performing the experiment in practical classes are also very good. All the laboratories are well equipped. University of Calcutta has been recognising laboratories of the department as a trustworthy centre for conducting B.Sc Honours practical examinations since inception.

The department has a seminar library in addition to the central library of the college, which caters to the needs especially for its honours students. The library contains more than 1000 books. There is a good mix of rare and contemporary text and reference books.

A number of teachers are engaged in research activities and contribute to the peer reviewed journals. Many teachers of the department had published books which are very useful for both honours and general students.

The department organizes seminars regularly where ex-students of the department are usually invited as speakers. The students are also encouraged to participate in seminars and workshops organized by other institutions. Departmental students’ seminars are also arranged on a regular basis.

A departmental magazine is published annually where students, teachers and non-teaching staff of the department contribute. Retired professors and ex-students contribute every year to enrich the publication.

Various departmental committees, consisting of teachers from the department, have been functioning effectively for more than three decades. These committees meet regularly to discuss and solve the academic issues related to routine, syllabus, examinations, library, laboratory etc.
