Career and Counselling Cell
The Institutions of higher education can no longer remain content by merely arranging a series of lectures to be delivered in classes. They have to face the inevitable query 'What do I do after I pass out?' The Career & Counseling Cell was recently born out of a desire to address this query.
The basic objectives of the Cell are three fold:
- to sensitise the students about opportunities, both in their pursuit of higher studies and in their search for jobs
- to groom them for the job market, and
- arranging for campus interview of final year students.
Teachers have always advised students about opportunities, but done so in an informal way. We hope to consolidate the process into a regular and formal College activity. For enhancing the employability of the students, our UGC- financed Career & Counseling Cell is conducting skill development workshops and training sessions from the coming academic session. A small beginning has already been made in respect of placement, as a few final year Commerce students/ fresh Science graduates have received job offers from very reputed companies. We hope that from the coming session, the initial trickle will be transformed into a steady stream.
The U.G.C. encourages the introduction of Remedial Courses for students belonging to the SC/ST category. City College, with a large number of students from the aforementioned “backward categories", is well-suited to conduct such a course. With the financial assistance from the UGC, we are poised to introduce remedial classes in our College from the academic session 2010-11.
The classes for the said course will be taken before/after the regular College hours or during vacations. At least 100 students must enrol for the scheme. The target group is the 1st year students. To begin with, the facility would be provided in a few departments, which shall choose the papers/subjects in which remedial classes shall be taken. Linguistic proficiency will also be focused upon. There will be at least 50 hours of teaching for a 100-mark paper.
The classes, conducted on the lines of a tutorial, are likely to greatly benefit the students who are lagging behind. It is hoped that with the introduction of the scheme, the results of such students in the University examinations will improve substantially.
