City College, being one of the premium educational abodes of our state, had initiated its glorious journey as a key-institution in the Bengal Renaissance. Born as a brain-child of a highly intellectual community called The Sadharan Brahmo Samaj in 1881 this institution has relentlessly continued its elevated responsibility of a navigator for the society, be it in educational field or social. It is my most honoured privilege to have been endowed with the responsibility of being the 24th Principal of this prestigious institution. Addressing to all the stake-holders of this college here is a brief and humble message from my side.

It is not just carry-forwarding the legacy of 142 years but at every step unlocking a new stage of development, exploring a new horizon of wisdom in education and enlightenment is our motto. We welcome students from all over the state, all parts of the country and also from Bangladesh and other countries irrespective of their class, caste, creed, religion, economic background and the likes. It is our sole delight in delivering quality education to our students and we can boast of having our former students in various responsible positions across the globe. The community of City College consisting of the Teachers, Non-teaching staffs, Students, Alumni/ae, Guardians et al proudly marches towards a brighter sunshine with its strong foundation of education, extra-curricular activities, job placements and above all a powerful bonding of respect for the institution. At present we have total 14 honours subjects namely Bengali, English, Sanskrit, History, Philosophy, Political Science in Humanities, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Botany, Zoology and Physiology in Science and Accountancy and Economics in Commerce and 1 general subject as Hindi and we are eagerly looking forward to introduce new subjects to our offer of curriculum in the coming days. At present our college only offers UG courses, but our aim is to introduce PG courses for some potentially equipped departments. Our approach towards students is completely secular and we focus onto the complete character-building process of all students by trying to make them men and women of conscience, morality, compassion, team-spirit, respect etc. by means of providing them a homely atmosphere where they can learn to study, to indulge into games and sports, into cultural and social activities and thus have a wide opportunity of spreading their impulsive wings of growing up.

With a very rich and highly trained teaching strength we make sure that each student receives proper attention and at the same time we strongly emphasise on students’ attendance in the classes too. Weaker students are separately taken care of. We have an active anti-ragging cell. Our institution has no records of sexual harassment. Basic infrastructural aspects like classroom, laboratory, library, electricity, drinking water, washroom etc. are maintained with top-notch priority. In terms of safety and security of the entire institution it is to be mentioned that we have security personnel posted for round the clock in all the entrances of our college and in addition to that the entire college is under the supervision of CC TV surveillance cameras.

Regular mode of learning is emphasised with frequent seminars and workshops where the students can take part both as a paper-presenter and as an attending participant. These activities help them grow team spirit as well as research aptitude. Their activities are duly recognised and certified by the competent authorities along with my signature. Every year our students make us proud by winning trophies in some or the other inter-college quiz or debate or essay writing competitions. Subjects having excursions in its syllabus enable its students to go on a series of Educational tours under the supervision of our teaching staffs every year. In fact, students from other subjects are also taken to small day trips to various educational destinations within the city limits. We are blessed to have interested students in all such activities; their urge for wisdom motivates us further into the service.

Our college also has its dedicated sports ground and our students regularly take part in Cricket and Football tournaments organized by the University of Calcutta or any other colleges. We also specially encourage existing and former students who perform outstandingly in the field of games and sports in State or National level. During various cultural programmes conducted either by the Cultural Sub-committee or by the Students’ Union a number of students perform breath-taking shows of cultural creativity that includes dancing, singing, playing musical instrument, performing drama etc. Apart from these co-curricular activities we also cater to the students’ future career aspects by means of organizing on campus interviews for the final semester appearing students. A number of reputed industrial and multi-national companies have appeared in our college for such purpose and have selected our students for employment in their organisations. Our college also engages into activities of social welfare like organizing blood donations camps (by Students Union), organising camp for blanket distribution among the footpath dwellers, arranging free Covid vaccine camp during the time of pandemic. By the initiatives taken up by Students’ Union, City College we had helped our state by allowing the college building to become quarantine centre. Our students have also distributed food and ration to the footpath dwellers in the city as well as the remote poor villagers of many parts in our state during the pandemic.

Thus, I whole-heartedly believe that the glorious baton of enlightenment and wisdom, as set up by the minstrels of the Bengal Renaissance and handed over to us by the age old heritage of this college, is now in the hands of befitting workmen of the present. Still there are miles to go before I sleep. With your (all the stake holders) dedicated effort and endeavour this college will continue its journey towards excellence as a pillar of our nation.
