About the Department
Brief History:
The Department of Philosophy has a distinguished history not only in City College but also in the entire annals of university education in India.
Around 1881-82 the department was founded and Pandit Shibnath Sastri took the leading role.
The Department got its true impetus to philosophical studies from the intellectual giant of 19th century like Acharya Brajendranath Seal and in the following decades flourished under the great scholars of 20th century Prof. Hiralal Halder, Prof P. B.Chatterjee, Prof. Mohit Sen, Prof. Debiprasad Chattopadhyaya, Prof.Satindranath Chakraborty, to name a few. Their intellectual rigour, sharpness of perception, artful and profound subtlety in philosophical issues influenced the academic world and brought international recognition for the College.
The history of the Department would remain incomplete without the mention of her students who brought honour and pride for the college. Prof. Ramaprasad Das, an alumnus of the department became the Vice Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University.
The Department's contribution to general college activities is by no means negligible. Prof.Satindranath Chakraborty, Prof. Sridhar Banerjee helped the college administration to overcome the crisis when it mattered most for the benefit of teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. Prof. Chakraborty enjoys a special place in Bengal education system as he played a pioneering role to promote welfare of the teaching fraternity.
